Keep Learning

Remember every day is a learning experience. If you stop learning, you will travel one of the quickest paths to old-fashioned that you can find. When you stop learning, you stop growing both personally and professionally. When you stop growing, you stop advancing in the world. The world is steadily changing make sure you are ready to change with it. What is important is to keep learning, to enjoy challenges, and to tolerate uncertainty as we said in my old army unit; adjust, adapt and overcome. HOO A.

It's cold

Last week quite possible may have been the last warm night we get this year. It is now mostly dark by 7:30 and the night air is feeling a little fresher. I even had to scrape frost off my car windows one morning. It has even been cold enough that there have been rumors of some overnight freezing. It is all good though. Old man winter is here. I enjoyed the end of the LSU vs. Alabama game, the Tigers pull it off.

Don't Forget Tuesday.

Can you believe it’s nearly November already? And that Election Day is this coming Tuesday?  Time flies.  It seems like summer just ended.  Believe or not, many folks are expected to forget that Tuesday is Election Day. Go voice your opinion and be heard. Get ready for the weather to get cooler, also.

Fun at the Fair

I’ve always loved the fair! As a child I’d play the games and ride the rides over and over.  I still like to go but now eat the polish sausage every time I go and turkey legs. There was a ghost house at the last fair I went to. It wasn't like a ride. It was MUCH scarier than that. You walked blindly along these pitch black corridors. A horrible bloodied skeleton or corpse would suddenly smash against a cage. Even the floor was unstable because you had to step over things. Nobody leaves alive, the sign read, well, we did! Have fun at the fair.

Staying Educated

I think purpose of education is an essential part of any society. Without education, a society would not survive for long. The purpose of education is to teach, or pass on information, from one person to another. This is so important, because this is how we as a society are able to better the society in which we live. The benefits of education are endless. The personal satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment upon receiving a college degree is one that cannot easily be topped. College education is becoming even more important than it has been in the past. A bachelor's degree is now becoming a minimum requirement for many jobs that previously only required a high school diploma. There is much debate today on what would be the best way to reform education. Education reform means to make education better by removing defects. True educators are always thinking of more effective ways to enhance the way children learn. With the continuous change of growing population, economics, culture, family, and fad, there has to be continuous educational reforms to keep the society abreast with these changes. Regardless of the era in which education reform is thought of, the number one priority is the children. I feel future of education is very promising to the younger generations. From kindergarten through college many changes are brewing. On the horizon are things like smart objects, full-length online courses, and  devices designed to equalize education.

My Saturday is kind of free this weekend. I have some homework, but I took the day off work to see some sick relatives. Tonight I'm relaxing.  I have watched some college football today. Number 19 South Carolina beat number 1 Alabama. Sometimes success is all a matter of timing: the right coach, the right school, the right player. Opponents have had little chance against Alabama the past few seasons. Don't look now but LSU is leading at half time. This could give LSU a chance to be in higher top spot in the SEC. I think Alabama has plenty left, but they finally know that they aren’t indestructible. Arkansas gave them a warning, and South Carolina made it patently obvious. It’s going to be a very interesting battle for the SEC crown this year. This will be the talk at the barber shops next week. To those of you who don't enjoy sports this could mean more television time and money for LSU, Baton Rouge. Go Tigers!!!

Long sleeves needed

It’s getting cooler in the mornings. I went shopping today, in between taking care of some of my responsibilities.  It’s time to start looking for some winter clothes. My budget is having a problem fitting the look I want this year. The price of everything seems to put me in more of a looking then shopping mood. I am going to look at my old things and see what I can add to them. Sometimes an old outfit can look new and fresh by adding a new shirt, tie, a pair of pants, or belt. With just one item the look can be transformed quickly without spending a lot of time or money. I don’t have a lot of expensive thing hanging in my closest. I do have a hundred or so of neck ties. I am going to have to look for some green light specials or for some online deals on some items. I found that some places have Christmas decorations up already.  October just started yesterday.  I guess it’s time to put gifts on lay-a-way. Happy Holidays everyone.

Every day is a learning experience.

This past week has been a busy one for me. I’m a full time nontraditional student with a full time job and two part-time jobs just to make ends meet.  My weekends consist of working on customers’ credit applications for a mortgage company, detailing cars and cutting grass in this heat, along with studying and doing homework. I had a meeting at the Small Business Administration (SBA), during the week,  to help with my business. They gave me some information that could assist me. I found that there are a lot of programs that could finance some improvement in your business if you ask the write questions. I recommend that all of you who want to enhance a business make an appointment with the local SBA and/or the local procurement center. The SBA does not make loans directly to small businesses but does help to educate and prepare the business owner to apply for a loan through a financial institution or bank. The SBA then acts as a guarantor on the bank loan. In some circumstances it also helps to procure loans to victims of natural disasters, works to get government procurement contracts for small businesses, and assists businesses with management, technical and training issues. LSUS also has a small business development center that may be able to help. I am looking forward to working a little smarter and less hard. I received some vital information for me to obtain a government contract. I thought I would share this , it may benefit some of you or remind others.

It’s family night “my time to cook”

I’m about to cook a lasagna with some corn on the cob, and garlic bread. I thought I would go ahead with my post before I get away from the computer and forget to blog.
My grandmother did one on one cooking instructions with me when I was little. I think everyone should learn how to cook. Not everyone needs to become a chef, but knowing the basics is must.
When we cook, we save money and we eat healthier. Also, we never know in what kind of situation we are going to find ourselves. And since we all have to eat, it just seems logical that knowing a little bit about cooking will come in handy sometimes in life. This is also a good time to hang out with family and even get kids in the kitchen for some one on one.
So go into the kitchen and start with simple things. Scramble an egg, or cook some pasta; make some mashed potatoes or steam some vegetable. If the food does not taste as good the first or second time, it is ok, you are learning, keep trying. You will find, before you know it, you are having a dinner party.
I don’t know where I heard this, but I think some of you may have heard this before”some people eat to live and some live to eat,” I live to eat.

Getting educated and fit at a young age

Thirty-three percent (33%) of Shreveport youth participated in organized sports last year, compared with 85 to 90 percent of children in the suburbs, according to a 2010 State University report, there are 46,000 children in the Shreveport, La area schools between the ages of pre-kindergarten to 12th according to Caddo parish schools web site. In contrast to the city area, the suburbs have a full array of youth sports with strong financial support. This late start for urban children, in organized sports robs them of the opportunity for physical activity, coaching, being part of a team, learning skills, and substantial time away from "negative recreation" (drugs, violence or sexual activities).

Clinical studies also show that sports and recreation programs can help youth establish lifelong, healthy, physical activity patterns. Regular physical activity can ward off life-threatening diseases; reduce feelings of depression and anxiety; help control weight and obesity; and build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints, according to the President's Council on Physical Fitness.

The children in the city's core must have the opportunity for a successful start in education and sport regardless of age, race, gender, family composition, income or community.
